Personal Protective Guide

Job Task:  Oxygen – Acetylene Torch Operation

Hazards:  Inhalation of fumes, gases and dust, eye and trauma injury due to projectiles, foot injury due to dropped items, and burn injury due to heat, sparks or slag

Although other exposures exist, they are not controlled by personal protective equipment; therefore, they are not indicated in this manual.

Additional Comments:  Operate equipment in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Face shields are considered secondary protection and should always be worn with safety glasses or goggles under the shield.  Wear eye safety shield/helmet with proper filter lens.  Wear appropriate gloves when object being handled could cause cuts, punctures, or abrasions to hands.  Gloves should be gauntlet style and clothes should be made of clean fire-resistant materials and should have no front pockets or cuffs. Shirts should be left outside of trousers.  Use adequate ventilation or the appropriate type chemical respirator.  Remove flammable and combustible material from the immediate area.  Provide a fire watch if area cannot be protected or shielded.
