Personal Protective Guide

Job Task:  Meter Pit Entry

Hazards:  Exposure to insufficient oxygen, inadequate ventilation, limited means of entry/exit, combustible and toxic gases, falls while entering/exiting, eye and face injuries from work being performed, lifting injuries from moving the pit cover, and possible loud noise from operations

Although other exposures exist, they are not controlled by personal protective equipment; therefore, they are not indicated in this manual.

Additional Comments:  Follow the confined space entry procedures.  Check the condition of entry ladder or steps.  Use a manhole cover removal device.  A SCBA is needed for entry to spaces that are immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH).  Hearing protection may be needed depending upon the activity being performed.
